Why do BIA and SBCOC Members Partner with HMAA?
- Local, Personalized Service: HMAA is a kama`aina company recognized for our exceptional customer service and responsiveness. We’re big enough to serve, small enough to care.
- Exclusive Savings: Members can save up to 15% on health insurance compared to standard small business rates in the market.
- Subsidized Association Dues: We invest in the trades. For qualifying groups, we’ll subsidize a portion of your BIA or SBCOC membership dues (up to $480/year). This covers the cost of your access to association safety training, lobbying, networking events, and other great benefits.

Benefits Designed for the Construction Trade
Your crew faces physical risks that office workers don’t. Our health plans address the wear and tear of the construction workforce, ensuring their well-being is protected for duty.
1. Access to Care 24/7
Concern: Time is money. If a foreman doesn’t feel well after long hours in the sun, leaving at the job site for 3 hours to sit in an urgent care waiting room kills productivity and delays in the schedule.
HMAA Solution: Through HiDoc®, members can talk with a local doctor online or by phone within minutes anytime, anywhere—at no cost. They can get a diagnosis and prescription without waiting for a clinic to open, helping them recover and return to work more quickly. If they feel stressed and want to consult with a therapist, mental health concerns can also be treated through HiDoc®. Consultations are intended to work in tandem with your primary care physician (PCP), not as a replacement.
2. Physical Maintenance with Alternative Care Benefits
Concern: Construction is an industrial athlete’s game. Repetitive motion, heavy lifting, and tool vibration lead to musculoskeletal issues that can sideline your best workers.
HMAA Solution: Our medical plans include Acupuncture, Chiropractic, Massage, and Naturopathic services. Regular back and hip adjustments and massage therapy can keep your crew working pain-free and reduce the likelihood of a major injury.
3. Your Health is Our Priority
Concern: Health concerns, financial stress or family issues can lead to setbacks on the job.
HMAA Solution: Our unique suite of wellness solutions including worksite flu vaccinations and biometric screenings, free incentives for expectant moms, disease prevention programs, worksite wellness planning assistance, and other resources can support the well-being of your crew and boost retention (requirements apply). Our Member Plus discounts and special offers from local merchants “perks” in their pocket that adds value to their membership.
4. We’ve Got You Covered
Concern: Beyond professional growth and safety, employees look for exceptional benefits and improved work-life balance when looking for a job.
HMAA Solution: To supplement our medical PPO plans, HMAA offers vision benefits, prescription drug, dental and orthodontia, life/AD&D insurance, and Active&Fit ® coverage. Our vision plans are especially popular in the construction industry, covering annual exams and corrective lenses which are vital for safety.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1. Do I have to be a BIA or SBCOC member to get a quote?
No, you don’t need to be a BIA or SBCOC member to receive a proposal. You can request a free quote from us first. If you choose to enroll with HMAA, we can coordinate your BIA or SBCOC membership application so you qualify for our exclusive rates immediately.
2. We have projects on Neighbor Islands. Is coverage statewide?
Yes, BIA, SBCOC, and HMAA served the entire state. Whether your project is in Kapolei, Kona, or Kahului, you can access our PPO provider network statewide, as well as on the Mainland. Our telemedicine service is also a great asset for crews working in remote locations where access to a doctor may be limited.
3. Do you cover non-union shops?
Yes, Our Associations Health Plan is an excellent solution for open-shop contractors looking to provide competitive benefits to attract skilled labor. It allows you to attract talent that fits your needs.
4. How does the dues subsidy work?
For qualifying groups in the HMAA’s Association Health Plan, we pay up to $480 per year toward your BIA and SBCOC membership dues. This supports the association that works for your industry’s interest while lowering your operational costs.
5. Can I cover variable-hour or project-based employees?
Coverage depends on the number of hours they work. We can help structure your insurance plan to ensure compliance for your core crew and eligible project staff without overextending your budget. In Hawaii, the Prepaid Health Care Act mandates coverage for employees working at least 20 hours a week for four consecutive weeks. Other requirements apply.
